Request A Quote Frequently Asked Questions What is custom Specmix mortar matching, and how does it benefit my project? We can custom match the mortar to samples you provide, meaning that you get a spot-on match that will blend in with the original. If you can’t find the right color among the Specmix standard colors or our HFS Specmix Type N color range we will create a custom color for your job. What do I need to provide for a custom mortar match? We need a representative sample of the existing mortar to be matched, and it needs to be large enough to accurately show the color and appearance of the existing mortar to be matched. Select a sample that reflects the conditions that need to be matched, while considering that weathering and soiling patterns vary around a single building. How long does it take to get a custom mortar match? Typical lead time is approximately two weeks for laboratory matching (expedited service is available depending on our workload) and upon approval we are generally able to fulfill mortar orders in 1-3 days, depending on our production schedule and the size of the order. Please call us to check lead times, especially in the peak season from April – November. If you don’t have time for a custom match we will also check our library of previous color matches to see if we can identify an acceptable color. Can Specmix create unique colors that don’t exist in standard selections? Henry Frerk Sons will create unique colors using Specmix mortar. Our color matching is virtually limitless. Are there limits on the types of colors or finishes you can match? Colors are only limited by our limits on pigment loading, but this isn’t generally an issue with Specmix mortar. “Finish” in this case will be limited by tooling by the mason but it will also be determined by the aggregate and water content. Finer aggregate creates a “smoother” finish and water content will affect its texture and color. (More water disperses the pigments and tends to affect color, which is why we recommend limiting water content. It also increases mortar volume, and more water can lead to shrinkage and cracking.) Note: Henry Frerk Sons custom colors are available for Mortar Types N and O. For more information please contact Elisabeth Logman by phone at 773-389-3324 or by email at elogman@hfsmaterials.com.
