Henry Frerk Sons is a 130-year-old family-owned supplier of concrete, masonry, plaster and sewer supplies in Chicago.  Our team is comprised of extremely hard-working individuals who take pride in their work and are supportive of their co-workers.  Aside from our building materials division, we have two unique and separate divisions that set our company apart from all other material suppliers.  We operate a fleet of 12 volumetric concrete mixing trucks which pour highly specialized modified concrete products for DOT work.  We also have a historic restoration materials division that performs custom material matching and pre-blending of special mixes for repairing historic masonry, concrete, plaster, stucco, stone and terra cotta buildings.

 

Your Valued Role

We are seeking a candidate who is very organized, comfortable with handling a diversity of tasks and enjoys a fast paced and dynamic atmosphere.  This position will be responsible for measuring out and loading ingredients into our industrial mixing equipment, operating our mixing equipment and bagging/skidding the blended material.  This position will also spend time in our materials lab testing for quality control, assisting with material matching, making material samples for customers, preparing material sample kits and other office related work that is pertinent to the overall function and growth of the restoration materials division.  This position will have their own material laboratory complete with a desk, computer and printer.

 

Job Tasks

  • Read blend recipes, weigh out ingredients and load ingredients into blending equipment manually or with the use of a forklift
  • Mix, cast and cure blend retention samples for comparison to control samples
  • Operate blending equipment which currently consists of a 9 cubic foot rotary blender and a larger 30 cubic foot paddle blender with an electronic HMI system
  • Prepare small material blends or samples using lab equipment or drill mixer
  • Clean blending equipment and perform scheduled maintenance
  • Compare raw ingredients and final blend retention samples with material control samples to ensure blend accuracy
  • Follow all established lab procedures and write new operating procedures as necessary
  • Responsible for maintaining a clean and organized blending area and laboratory at all times
  • Maintain an organized and accessible collection of project samples and formulas
  • Report any safety hazards to a supervisor

Ideal Background Profile

  • Must be able to lift 100 lbs, stand on concrete for long periods of time and work in both a warehouse and office setting
  • Shall have moderate computer skills with experience using Microsoft word, Excel and be able to learn new software
  • Must be able to calculate basic math such as percentages, fractions, ratios, weight conversions and volume calculations
  • Ability to communicate clearly with customers and co-workers in a courteous and polite manner
  • Be able to work independently and be able to manage time effectively and prioritize work when under pressure
  • Shall be organized and be able to maintain clear and consistent records and blend formulas
