Niagara Pozzolan Hydraulic Lime (PHL) is a high-purity Blended Hydraulic Lime using a high purity dolomitic limestone.
Both PHL 3.5 and PHL 5.0 Blended Hydraulic Lime complies with ASTM C1707-09 and ASTM C821-14 (Pozzolanic Hydraulic Lime for Structural Purposes).
PHL restoration mortar provides breathability, flexibility, and durability which is necessary for both historic masonry restoration Niagara PHL contains absolutely no Portland Cement, which helps reduce potential damage in historic applications where it was not originally used. It also offers exceptional plasticity and workability, and as a lime-based mortar, this product provides excellent water vapor transference. This is especially important in non-Portland cement-based applications such as historic restoration.
We rely on pozzolanic hydraulic lime (PHL) along with natural hydraulic lime (NHL) for most of our historic restoration work. Both are hydraulic limes with pozzolans or impurities. This means that the mortar will set in two stages. The first set will occur when water is added. This allows the mortar to set in wet conditions and gain strength more quickly during its initial set. The second begins when the mortar is exposed to the atmosphere, this set occurs more slowly allowing the mortar to slowly accumulate strength over time.
This pointing mortar for the restoration of historic brick is sold as a dry bagged product. It is flexible and breathable enough for restoration, and durable enough for extreme conditions.
Pozzolan Lime Binder (PHL) is a manufactured lime product and its pozzolan impurities are added during its manufacturing. It is available as Moderately Hydraulic (PHL 3.5), and Eminently Hydraulic (PHL 5.0). PHL 5.0 works best for Chicago’s climate. It usually takes around 7 days to cure and achieve strength.
You can purchase PHL and bulk sand from our yard and blend them yourself, or you can purchase preblended PHL that is already mixed with your desired aggregate. We recommend this option if you are unfamiliar with this product or blending mortar. Our products are produced domestically and kept in stock to ensure they are readily available.
